It's time to talk about wine. Many of you who know me know that right along with my loves of technology and Enlightenment philosophy goes my love of wine. I am no less wine geek than document geek -- not one bit.
Because of this, over the past few months, many people have told me that I must see the movie Sideways. Well, I finally saw it and now, as it sparked many friends and associates to think of me (and I appreciate that!), I need to set the record straight on a couple of things.
First, that sorry excuse for a wine buff was far more pretentious than knowledgeable -- and pretty darn annoying. This was not a wine movie, people! :) Of course, the sad, narcissistic self-pity reminded me of an ex-boyfriend, so perhaps my feelings toward that character are not the movie's fault ;-)
Anyway -- the reason I was motivated to blog on this is because of how much harm the movie apparently did to the Merlot trade in this country and the irony therein. I personally could do without Merlot, but it has nothing to do with wine quality -- I just don't usually like it...except in some better blends, which brings me to the point of this little rant.
The pathetic hero of that film had a '61 Chateau Cheval Blanc St. Emilion, which was the jewel of his collection. It ended up being the denoument of the story, as you might recall.
Here's the irony, folks: Though Cheval Blanc uses an unusually high proportion of Cabernet Franc for a St. Emilion, it is about 1/3 Merlot.
Just thought you might like to know before your next tasting :)
Okay, back to work for me ... Happy Thursday!
