TO ASK A QUESTION: If you have a question or need help with Office, please feel free to use the 'Click to Contact' link at the bottom of this page. You'll get a form that you can use to email a question to me. (I had been getting a ton of spam when accepting direct emails, so only emails that use this form will get through to me.)
Please be sure to mention the version of Office you are using when you send your question.
I answer all e-mails that I receive via this form, as long as they are polite :)
Since disabling comments on this site, I'm actually hearing from more of you with questions ... so, as it seems people prefer to email rather than comment, I'm going to leave comments disabled. As always, you can ask me any Office-related questions you have. If the question is outside of my expertise, I'll try to direct you to where you can get an answer.
Follow-up on today's Excel 2007 charts webcast
Hi, everyone! Thanks to all who took the time to attend today's session. For those who wanted to but weren't able to make it, the recorded version should be available on-demand by tomorrow ... Meanwhile, below are some additional resources as promised.
If I forget to post something I promised, or if you have any questions you didn't get a chance to ask during the session, please add it as a comment to this post and I'll respond as quickly as I can...
For those who want a review or resource for charting basics - check out the charting content already available for Excel 2007 charts at Office Online (the beta site)...
Creating Charts
Formattings Charts
Another nice intro to the basics, with some good tips is an article from author and Excel MVP Curt Frye:
Creating Powerful Charts by Using the New Microsoft Office Excel 2007 Charting Capabilities
For trainers and support professionals - if you have folks who could use a basic intro to Excel 2007 charts ... Office Online Training has started to post some of their fantastic free training courses for 2007 already, including Charts I - How to Create a Chart in Excel 2007
For one of the best charting tutorials anywhere - basic and advanced ... check out Excel MVP and chart guru Jon Peltier's site. His charting content isn't updated for 2007, but there's a tremendous amount of value there just the same. Jon's site is also interesting for those with a scientific bent toward charting (as opposed to a presentation perspective like mine).
Office Online content on working with the new Excel tables feature:
Using Excel Tables
For lots of help on PivotTables - from basics to well beyond - lots of Office Online content:
PivotTable reports and PivotChart reports
To learn more about working with Themes in Office - check out a super article by Office System MVP Beth Melton:
Exploring the Benefits of Document Themes in the 2007 Microsoft Office System
For the steps to getting the last date to appear on your scatter line x-axis ... check out an earlier post on this blog. The steps are Excel 2003 (I've not yet had time to update) ... but the only difference is the way the dialog box looks and the fact that, if the result of your major unit calculation has more than 7 decimal places, just enter the first 7 into the Format Axis dialog box:
Show the Data's Exact End Date on a Line Chart X-Axis
For lots of tips and best practices on advanced Excel 2007 charting ... as well as a primer on PivotTables ... keep an eye out for my book, Advanced Microsoft Office Documents 2007 Edition Inside Out ... coming in February. You can click the 'my books' link on the left of this page for more info :)
... I think this pretty much covers things, but don't hesitate to post a comment if I missed something. I know I went through A LOT and did so quite quickly ... so if you need steps for PV charts, Bubbles, or any other tip I covered today ... just ask! :)
Hope to see you next Thursday for a level 300 tips & tricks session on creating PowerPoint 2007 presentations ... you can register for that here:
